Milestones

Pioneer Insurance is established in May 1954 with a staff of five at the Quisumbing Building, along Dasmariñas Street in Binondo, Manila. Among its first officers are Johnny Cheng as Chairman; Lorenzo Chan Toh as President; and Yang Pao Wang as General Manager.

Four years from inception, premium volume surpass the P1 million mark.

Operations expand outside Manila with a provincial branch in Cebu. This was followed through to the 1990s by the establishment of 15 other branches in key cities in the Philippines: Bacolod, Cabanatuan, Cagayan de Oro, Dagupan, Davao, General Santos, Iligan, Iloilo, Lipa, Manila, Naga, San Fernando, Subic, Tacloban, and Zamboanga.

Ventured overseas with the opening of the branch in Hong Kong, remaining to date the only local insurance company writing direct business in China’s Special Administrative Region.

Pioneer Life Assurance Corporation, a life affiliate is formed - helping clients chart a path of financial stability through a superior term product and attractive investment rider.

Pioneer's first building, Pioneer House Manila, is inaugurated providing bigger and more equipped workplaces for a growing workforce.

Pioneer Intercontinental Insurance Corporation, a non-life subsidiary, is established to service a targeted segment of the insurance market primarily in downtown Manila.

The full claim amount of US$11 million is paid for the loss of the Philippine Leader two months after the oil tanker sank in the Indian Ocean. At the time, this is considered the biggest and the fastest Marine Hull claim settlement in Philippine insurance history.

Pioneer Insurance marks its 20th year by breaking into the top five ranks of the non-life insurance industry.


  • A P45-million insurance package is extended for the Thrilla in Manila, the super heavyweight bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier at the Araneta Coliseum. The package includes personal accident insurance and third party liability.


 

  • Issued a unique coverage for the Las Piñas bamboo organ, underlining the company’s concern for the preservation of the country’s cultural treasures. The national treasure was air-shipped for repairs to Bonn, West Germany.  Built in 1816, the Las Piñas bamboo organ is described by international organ masters as one of the finest in the world.

Together with brokers in London, a transit cover of US$130 million is arranged for the transshipment of priceless Chinese and Egyptian artifacts for public viewing in Manila - considered the biggest single air cargo exposure ever placed in the world reinsurance market then.

New corporate headquarters, Pioneer House Makati, are opened in the country prime business district.

Pioneer's performance remains steadfast even during the critical last years of the Marcos regime with gross premiums surpassing the P300 million mark.

The country's biggest single cargo claim is settled with a US$2.2M payment for the disappearance of 4,491 metric tons of finished steel products. The cargo was on board Isla Luzon, which was hijacked en route to the South. A $2.75 million-claim was also paid as the Hull insurer.

Designated the exclusive insurer of the 1991 Manila Southeast Asian Games, providing P720 million worth of group personal accident coverage to all accredited athletes, officials, and sportswriters from 9 participating countries. This was followed by other sponsorships: 1992 Barcelona Olympics; 1993 Southeast Asian Games; 1994 Asian Games;  1995 Southeast Asian Games; 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Consolidated gross premiums written break the P1 billion mark.

A fully collateralized P19.5 billion surety bond is issued for the development and conversion of Fort Bonifacio into a world-class city - setting a record as the biggest in local insurance history.


  • Appointed the Official Insurer of the Philippine national athletes and coaches, providing them with continuous year-long cover and not only when there is an event. This sustains the company' support for sports development in the Philippines.


 

  • Entered into a five-year joint venture known as Pioneer Allianz Life Assurance Corp. with Europe's largest global insurer and provider of financial services Allianz A.G.


  • Appointed the Official Insurer of the Philippine Production of Miss Saigon - a world-acclaimed musical that has showcased Filipino theater artists, including multi-awarded Lea Salonga, to global audiences.


 

  • Launch of Life Simplified advertising campaign. Its television commercial goes on to receive 10 local and international awards. It was cited at the Asian TV Awards and the only Filipino finalist in the Insurance category of the Midas Awards at the New York Festivals. It received the Philippine advertising industry’s highest honor, a Platinum, at the Araw Awards of the Philippine Ad Congress and was recognized at the New York Festivals with a Finalist certificate in the Banking and Finance subcategory of the TV and Cinema Advertising Awards.

Life operations reach its own milestone by entering the top ten ranks of new business premiums in the life industry.

Launch of Pioneer Life Inc.

Pioneer marks its 50th anniversary with a Museo Pambata tie-up, in line with its commitment to education.

Designated anew as the exclusive insurer of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games held in Manila and other key cities around the country, providing accident coverage for over 10,000 accredited athletes and officials from 11 participating countries.

Pioneer continues to actively support outstanding Filipino artistry with exhibition insurance for National Artists Bencab and fashion icon Monique Lhuillier.


  • The completion of Pioneer House Cebu brings life and non-life operations in Cebu together in the heart of the business district.



  • Concert coverages for Christina Aguilera and Beyonce mark the beginning of Pioneer's involvement in event insurance. These are followed over the next few years by coverages for Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Chris Brown, the Eraserheads reunion series, the Pussycat Dolls, Justin Timberlake and entertainment like the Harlem Globetrotters and Cirque du Soleil.



  • Pioneer expands its products to include microinsurance, by underwriting a specialized package for CARD MBA, a Ramon Magsaysay awardee and one of the largest microfinance organizations in the country.


  • Pioneer consumerizes insurance with the launch of sachet products SPARX and SPARXX, and Private Iris, a comic book series published by its subsidiary Blue Cow.


 

  • The Pioneer Foundation undertakes its most ambitious project with an agreement to build a Pioneer-Gawad Kalinga community in Pandi, Bulacan.


  • Pioneer Insurance is named Best Insurer in the Philippines for 2009 by Euromoney magazine. In addition, the Euromoney Insurance Survey also recognizes Pioneer Insurance as Best for Claims Resolution and Best for Innovation.


 

  • The International Labor Organization recognizes Pioneer's commitment to promote savings amongst Overseas Filipino Workers and their dependents with a 4-million peso grant through the ILO Microinsurance Innovation Facility, making the project the only one from the Philippines amid the 20 approved projects from around the world


  • The Private Iris comic book series is bestowed an Award of Merit at the 45th Anvil Awards for its novel initiative "Teaching Kids How to Save."



  • The 2010 Euromoney Global Insurance Survey recognizes Pioneer as the Best Insurer in the Philippines for the second consecutive year. Pioneer is also recognized as the Best Insurer in Asia, with special citations as Best Insurer in Asia in the General Property & Casualty and Employer Liability subcategories.



  • The collaboration with Museo Pambata continues with the launch of the museum's newest Career Options room, called Paglaki Ko, Gusto Ko Maging Manunulat/Ilustrador (When I grow up, I want to be a Writer/Illustrator) featuring characters from the Private Iris comic book series.



  • Pioneer underwrites Philippine history with its coverage of over 82,200 Precinct Count Optical Scan, or PCOS, machines used during the country's first-ever automated national elections.

The new brand tagline – Pioneer Your Insurance – is introduced.

Pioneer and the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD MRI) form a joint venture named CARD Pioneer Microinsurance, Incorporated. It is the country’s first non-life company organized to principally address the coverage requirements of the marginalized market. Covers include those for life, crop, personal accident, loss of income, and property damage caused by fire, flood, typhoon, and earthquake.

Pioneer celebrates its 60th year of serving the Filipino.



Pioneer announces its role as major shareholder of Pilipinas Taj, distributor of the Tata Motors brand of vehicles. Tata is the largest automobile company in India and among the biggest in the world.

Pioneer inaugurates Pioneer House Cagayan de Oro, its fourth building in the country. It is the first LEED Platinum-certified building in the Visayas-Mindanao region, and the second in the Philippines.

Pioneer establishes its leadership in the microinsurance segment with more than 18 million enrollments, more than double of the previous year’s figure of 8.5 millions.

Pioneer partners with Banco de Oro Insurance and SM to make insurance products more accessible to consumers via Insurance Made Easy @ SM. Through this partnership, products such as Comprehensive Third Party Liability for motorists, Medicash Dengue, and Safe Trip travel insurance are sold at the Business Services counters of all SM Stores nationwide.



Pioneer enters into a joint venture with MERALCO, the country’s largest distributor of electric power.  The new company M Pioneer Insurance Inc., combines the strengths and expertise of both groups as it writes non-life insurance products for the Filipino market.

Pioneer embarks on a digital transformation program to develop more efficient business processes that meet fast-evolving business and market requirements.

Pioneer hosts the first-ever Microinsurance Master Program that seeks to advance microinsurance through shared insights, best practices, training, and immersion. Participants include local and international delegates.

Pioneer offers the first-ever cyber insurance product in the local market, designed particularly for small to medium enterprises. This off-the-shelf product comes in three affordable packages that are designed to ease the financial burden on business owners in case of a cyberattack.

Pioneer launches relevant, affordable, and flexible insurance products to address COVID-19-related needs such as hospital cash assistance and personal accident insurance.

The digital transformation initiated in 2018 enables Pioneer to continue operations and the delivery of services through a global pandemic, as the team makes the shift to a work-from-home set up.

Notwithstanding pandemic restrictions, Pioneer continues to pay claims totaling P7.9 billion.

Pioneer launches uBeRhino (Pioneer Hollard Inc.), a joint venture BPO with Hollard, South Africa’s largest privately-owned insurance group. uBeRhino’s operations are powered by a combination of Pioneer’s operational proficiency and grasp of the local market; and Hollard’s expertise in direct-to-consumer marketing and call center management.

CARD-Pioneer Microsinsurance Inc. (CPMI) partners with state-run Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) to provide insurance protection to smallholder farmers of coconut, sugarcane, coffee, cacao, banana, and pineapple. This initiative marks the country’s first public-private partnership aimed at bridging the insurance gap and sustaining the development of agricultural insurance.

Pioneer Foundation

In line with its dream of becoming a model Filipino enterprise, Pioneer strives to be a responsible citizen through the Pioneer Foundation. Its continuing program is called TUPAD or Tulong Pang Dunong, a program that awards ten scholarships a year to deserving children of employees. Pioneer volunteer teams completed the Pioneer Gawad Kalinga Village in Pandi, Bulacan in support of GK’s mission of building communities to alleviate poverty.
